Titleist Launch New Advanced Performance Irons

Iron-specialists Titleist have recently released new versions of their extremely popular advanced performance (AP) irons. Whitley Golf writer Dan Bean had a sneak peek at the clubs that are hailed as some of the most versatile and superb-looking ever made. What he found out makes extremely interesting reading, and the images he sourced are stunning. See what you think…

“The new AP1 and AP2 irons offer the most successful marriage of playability and forgiveness, and traditional looks, feel and feedback available in the market today.” - Steve Pelisek, GM of Titleist Golf Clubs.

The Titleist AP1 IronContinuing to live up to their motto “Serious clubs for serious golfers”, Titleist are releasing their latest high performance irons, the AP1 and the AP2.

Building on the design and technology of the original AP irons, the AP1 and AP2 look traditional, but have a few new improvements built in.

“The new AP1 and AP2 irons embody significant improvements in feel, forgiveness and shot control to what had already been recognised as a revolutionary step forward in iron design”, said Steve Pelisek, GM of Titleist Golf Clubs.

“The new AP1 and AP2 irons offer the most successful marriage of playability and forgiveness, and traditional looks, feel and feedback available in the market today.”

The body of the AP1 is cast from stainless steel, with a thin face featuring Titleist’s ‘Tuned Feel System’ in the back cavity. This, coupled with a high density tungsten nickel sole, means the AP1 sounds and feels lively but solid, as vibration is kept to a minimum.

Brilliantly, the design and weighting of the AP1 means players can expect not only increased stability and improved ball speeds, but also a more forgiving club offering playability in most lies and turf conditions.

The AP2 has been club of choice recently across several professional tours, and over the last few weeks has been used by the likes of Zach Johnson, Nick Watney and Ben Curtis.

The build of the AP2 is much the same as its partner, but with a soft-forged carbon steel body, rather than stainless, cutting low end vibration and leading to a softer yet solid feel.

The Titleist AP1 IronShort and mid irons in the AP2 range also offer a reduced bounce sole, improving ground contact, and a longer hosel length, to aid flight. In long irons, the positioning of the join from shaft to head is shorter, meaning weight distribution is kept low, and launch is improved.

The AP irons are available for both right and left-handers, and are released in the UK on November 1 2009. The AP1s cost £80 per club for steel, and £94 for graphite, while the AP2s retail at £102 (steel), and £116 (graphite).
